Belkyra® is a product that can be used to dissolve double chins permanently. It is the only fat dissolving injection that has been approved and licenced by the MHRA.

What is the product?
Belkyra® has been available in USA since 2014 where it is known as Kybella®. Belkyra® was approved for use in the UK in 2021.
Belkyra® contains deoxycholic acid – this is a drug that when injected into fat cells causes them to dissolve. Once the fat cells in the treated area dissolve your body cannot form new pockets of fat so this is a permanent solution for double chins!

Is it safe?
Belkyra® has been approved and licenced by the MHRA which means there have been multiple clinical trials done to ensure its safety. As with any aesthetic treatment, there are possible side effects and complications which would be fully discussed with you prior to any treatment.

Can anyone with a double chin have this done?
No – it is unsuitable for some patients, for example if you have loose skin. Doctor Speedie will be able to assess your chin for suitability.

Does it hurt?
Patients in some clinical trials reported pain when the injections are performed. This is short lived.

When will it start to work?
Results are gradual but you should see a noticeable difference about 1 month after the treatment. Most people will need 2-4 treatment sessions in total. Treatments will be carried out 4-6 weeks apart.

How long will it last?
The results will be permanent, as once adipocytes (fat cells) burst they cannot re-form.

Are there any side effects?
Yes – you should expect quite significant swelling under your chin for about a week after the treatment. Although it may be unsightly, swelling is a good sign that Belkyra® is working and fat cells are bursting!

Will it completely get rid of my double chin?
After 2 treatment sessions about 1 month apart, 52% patients will be very happy with the result.
After 4 treatment sessions about 1 month apart, 75% patients will be very happy with the result.
After 6 treatment sessions about 1 month apart, 81% patients will be very happy with the result. As a result, Doctor Speedie will generally recommend no more than 4 sessions of Belkyra®.

Where can I get this?
Belkyra® will only be available from a handful of specialist clinics in the UK and will only be able to be administered by a Doctor or a dentist.
