Dermal Fillers

As we age our bodies are under constant attack from the weather, the sun, pollution, fatigue, hormone changes and the natural ageing process.

As a result of ageing, the skin’s production of hyaluronic acid declines. Hyaluronic acid is needed to retain moisture and keep the skin plump. This inevitable moisture loss causes the lines, folds and creases around the mouth, nose, jaw, cheeks and lips, giving us an older and more tired image.

Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance which contain hyaluronic acid. Injectable dermal fillers allow us to restore facial volume and improve the appearance of unwanted lines, creases and folds. By replacing facial volume in targetted areas, skin will appear smoother and feel softer, giving an overall more youthful look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What product is used?
The product used tends to depend on the area being treated. In general, at The Beauty Doctor, we use the Juvéderm® Vycross range of products. These replace the lost hyaluronic acid, thus moisturising the skin from within and helping to improve elasticity and tone. These fillers have the additional benefit of having a local anaesthetic already in the preparation, which leads to a more comfortable procedure and an overall more pleasant experience. The Juvéderm® Vycross range is our filler of choice, however other fillers are sometimes used for certain areas of the face.

Is it safe?
Yes. As with any medical procedure, there are risks which will be discussed in full before any treatment is done. To avoid or minimise risks associated with dermal fillers you should go to a reputable clinic such as The Beauty Doctor where all treatments are carried out by Doctor Joanna Speedie. Clinics offering cheap treatments are cheap because they have not spent much time on their training and education. Doctor Joanna continuously keeps her skills up to date.

Does it hurt?
Juvéderm® fillers have a local anaesthetic in them so pain is minimal, just a small sting initially. We will offer you a cold pack to try to reduce discomfort and bruising following injection.

When will it start to work?
Results will be seen immediately, however there may be swelling initially therefore we recommend full assessment of results is made 2 weeks following treatment.

How long will it last?
Juvéderm® fillers will last an average of 12-18 months.

Are there any side effects?
As with any medical procedure, dermal fillers can cause side-effects. The risks associated with having dermal fillers are small and would be discussed in full prior to receiving treatment. Common side effects include bruising, swelling and redness.

To minimise these risks avoid alcohol and blood thinning medication prior to attending for dermal filler injections. If you do not like the result of aesthetic treatment or a complication occurs then hylase can be used to dissolve the filler with immediate effect.

Areas for treatment

Lips
With ageing, the lips lose shape and volume resulting in a thin flat appearance. Dermal filler can be injected into the lips to restore shape and volume. At The Beauty Doctor we believe in creating natural-looking lips and to do this we use soft fillers to avoid an unnatural looking overfilled appearance.

Nasolabial lines
These are the lines which run between the bottom of the nose and the corner of the mouth. By placing a small volume of filler into this area the appearace of the line can be drastically improved.

Marionette lines
These are the lines which run from the corner of the mouth down to the chin. By placing filler into this area the appearance of the line can be drastically improved.

Perioral lines
These vertical lines on the upper lip occur as a result of smoking, and repeated movement of the lips. By using a small volume of a soft, light filler these lines can be filled and the appearance improved.

Cheeks
With ageing, fat pads which sit over the cheekbones start to descend. This results in a heavy-looking jawline and a flat appearance over the cheekbones.

By strategically placing filler along the cheekbones and in the mid-face it is possible to restore volume to the upper face. This can make the lower face immediately appear less heavy and give a more contoured looking appearance.

Tear trough
With ageing, the bone below the eye becomes thinner and the fat pads descend. This can lead to a hollow look. As this occurs people can look tired. By placing filler onto the bone the hollow appearance is improved. To carry out this treatment a blunt canula is used to increase safety when working in such a delicate area under the eye.

Other Areas

Chin
Filler can be used to improve the appearance of the chin. It can be used to project the appearance of the chin, fill chin dimples and increase facial contour.

Jawline
With ageing, the bones around the jaw become thinner and fat pads from the upper face descend leading to the appearance of jowls. Filler can be strategically placed to improve the appearance of the jawline.

Temples
With ageing, the temples can look hollow. This can lead to a tired and “skeleton-like” appearance. By placing filler into the temple region volume can be restored here.
